PRESERVATION OF CELL LINES
Equine gene banking and the preservation of cell lines are vital tools in safeguarding the genetic diversity of highly valuable horses—such as those with exceptional traits—and breeds at risk of decline or extinction. This process ensures that, in the event of a horse’s injury, disease, or death, valuable traits—such as bloodline, strength, endurance, or unique characteristics—can be preserved for future use.

Preservation of cell lines focuses on maintaining living cells, such as fibroblasts or stem cells, in a frozen state using cryopreservation techniques.
These cells can later be used for research, cloning, stem cell therapy, or regenerating genetic material. Together, these methods offer a powerful means to protect equine heritage, support breeding programs, and advance veterinary science.
PRESERVATION PROCESS
Genetic Preservation
The process involves a simple biopsy from skin or bone marrow, followed by the cultivation and multiplication of the derived cells, which are then stored in liquid nitrogen at-196°C to preserve the DNA indefinitely. This technique is minimally invasive and performed with the highest respect for animal welfare.
Express Tissue Banking
Express Tissue Banking (ETB) stores your horse’s tissue sample for potential future cloning, without requiring InnovumLab to develop new cells from it. This option is more affordable than the method described above, though ETB cannot guarantee that the sample will ultimately be suitable for cloning your horse.
