Cloning

The cloning technique used by InnovumLab is known as somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which involves obtaining cells via biopsy from a donor animal. Fibroblasts or stem cells are extracted and cultured in vitro until a sufficient number is obtained, then stored in liquid nitrogen. Our preferred choice of donor cells is mesenchymal stem cells obtained through bone marrow biopsy or lipoaspiration. However, fibroblast cells can also be used, though with lower efficiency.

For cloning, oocytes are harvested from a mare. The DNA is removed through enucleation, and then the cells (DNA) from the animal to be cloned are injected. Due to the high demand for mare oocytes, they are typically obtained from slaughterhouses.

After 7-10 days of in vitro culture, the resulting embryos are implanted into the uterus of a recipient mare using the embryo transfer technique, or they are frozen for future use. After eleven months of gestation, the mare gives birth to the cloned foal.
