ICSI-derived Embryo Transfer
The embryos produced in our ICSI lab can be transferred into a synchronized recipient mare, either fresh or after being frozen and thawed. We understand that equine logistics can be complex.
Therefore, we accept embryos for transfer that were produced in another ICSI laboratory and can also facilitate embryo shipment to another transfer station at the mare owner’s request.
The ICSI embryo must be transferred four days after the recipient mare ovulates. Therefore, it is crucial to closely monitor the recipient with daily scans to determine the exact time of ovulation.

RECIPIENT REQUIREMENTS

Ideal recipient mares are typically non-lactating, between 3 and 15 years old, and weigh between 500 and 750 kg. Mares over 12 years old must have successfully carried and delivered at least one healthy foal.
Recipient mares should be in excellent reproductive and general health, within 150 kg of the donor mare’s weight, have a good temperament, and possess a normal udder. Recently foaled mares can be used as recipients; however, it is advisable to wait at least 35 days after birth before transferring an embryo.
A general physical examination should be conducted first, followed by a thorough reproductive evaluation to identify any conditions that could hinder the mare’s ability to conceive after transfer or successfully carry a foal to term. Recipient mares may receive up to two or, at most, three embryos per year. If they fail to conceive or maintain a pregnancy after these attempts, they should no longer be used as embryo recipients.
